Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to a fun-filled year of Physical Education! We are especially excited about the Physical Education Program because of the great variety of activities that will be offered to your child this year. We hope every child can have an active, enjoyable, and successful Physical Education experience; one where action, learning, and fun are emphasized rather than winning.
The following information describes how the Physical Education grades will be earned, and in addition, are the rules and consequences that the students are expected to adhere by according to the school-parent-student compact.
MY PE GRADE:
The grade earned in Physical Education class at Paradise Education Center is based on participation, behavior and assessments according to the Arizona State PE Standards. 60% of your child’s grade is based upon demonstration of skills and assessments of the PE standards and the other 40% of their grade is based upon a participation and effort rubric (see below).
Category: POINTS EARNED 4 Always 3 Most of the Time 2 Some of the Time 1 Rarely
EFFORT: Participates actively, exhibits a positive attitude, Listens and follows directions the first time given. STAYS ON TASK!
PARTICIPATION: Uses equipment and materials appropriately. Follows the classroom and school rules.
PREPARATION: Has the appropriate equipment and/or materials for class(shoes, clothing, water bottle ect...).
PROPER DRESS: Proper dress for P.E. is as follows: tennis shoes and comfortable clothing, which does not restrict participation. School uniforms are acceptable as students are not allowed to change clothes. An extra white or school tee shirt can be worn under the uniform shirt if a student wishes to take off the uniform top. Dresses for girls are not allowed unless proper shorts are worn underneath. Sandals, flats, heels, boots, and untied shoes are not a proper shoe for P.E. This is the preparatory part of the rubric(4 points).
TYPICAL DAY IN PE:
WARM-UP ACTIVITY: This activity includes stretching and other calisthenics as deemed necessary for proper warm-up and muscular development. Duration: 5 to 10 minutes.
CARDIO-VASCULAR ACTIVITY: This is an activity designed to get each student’s heart and breathing rate up to an appropriate conditioning level (80% of maximum heart rate). The activities will include a moving/running activity, which might include jogging, sprinting or other locomotive forms. Jumping rope, Tag or another activity might replace a strictly running activity. Duration: 5 to 10 minutes.
SKILL LEARNING AND PRACTICE ACTIVITY: The students will practice skills taught that day and previously learned skills. Duration: 10 to15 minutes.
GAME PLAY: The students will play a regular or lead-up game that relates to the unit’s topic. Duration: 15 to 20 minutes.

(THESE MAKE-UP THE REMAINING 60% OF GRADE EARNED).
EXTRA BONUS POINTS: These points are given at the discretion of the teacher for outstanding participation, hustle or making a “great” play. Any student participating in a recreational activity outside of school can earn up to 10 points if his/her parent sends in a note or an email describing the activity.
ABSENCES: Includes medical and non-medical excuses. Absences can be made up by a student who brings in a signed note or an email from a parent/guardian explaining the physical activity. This must be done prior to the start of the next marking period. For example, an absence can be made up by the student by taking a 30-minute walk with their parent(s). If an absence is not made up, the student will lose 2 points of that day’s grade.
